The New School

the New School

Year: 2012

Project Type: Educational

The New School, located in New York City, was founded in 1919 under the premise of creating a haven for social research. While the New School still bases much of its offerings in social science, it has expanded drastically over the past century to include offerings in the arts, sciences and design.  The University Center, located in the heart of Union Square, showcases many design elements seen throughout New York City, while housing state of the art classrooms, research laboratories and dormitory facilities. It was also one of the first mixed use educational buildings in New York City to earn LEED Gold Status and remains one of the most recognizable buildings in Lower Manhattan. ABCO Peerless installed fire protection systems throughout the building, with the feature staircases creating unique challenges for installing the building’s fire standpipe system.
